A stunning show with a flypast of 17 x Spitfires, plus the full Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s fighters in formation with the Red Arrows. Then throw in energetic displays from other aircraft from the Battle era including a formation of Hurricanes, the Gloster Gladiator and Bristol Blenheim.
My first visit to this intriguing airshow located at the former British Aerospace factory (famous for the Harrier production) and now famous as being home to BBC TV’s Top Gear track. A mix of both aviation and motorsport, with a break mid-way through the airshow for a range of exotic & historic (plus some neither) cars to speed down the runway.

Departures day at RIAT in my view provides the best opportunity to photograph those aircraft that were in the static park during the show days. Aircraft include:

I have never witnessed such large crowds both within the airfield and in the surrounding fields at Duxford before, such was the pulling power of the opportunity to witness a pair of Avro Lancasters flying in formation together. Even though the weather didn’t play ball, with a grey murky cloud base and poor light descending in the hour leading up to their display, it did not detract from the spectacle.
Departures day at RIAT is always a highlight of the weekend, providing an improved opportunity to shoot the aircraft that were on static display.
RIAT returns to mark 50 display seasons of the RAF display team, the Red Arrows. Add in displays from Frecce Tricolori, Patrouille de France, Patrouille Suisse and the Breitling Jet Team display teams, and you have a classic airshow.
Additional display items included Typhoon, Chinook, F-16, Su-30, F/A-18C, Tornado, AMX, Gripen and BBMF.
